Even after twenty-seven years, the Kickboxer franchise is still… kicking.

RLJ Entertainment, who has released such films as The Cobbler and Bone Tomahawk, has acquired the US rights to the martial arts film starring Jean Claude Van Damme. The film also stars Dave Bautista as well as ex-MMA fighters Gina Carino, George St. Pierre and Cain Velasquez.

Directed by John Stockwell, the film will follow a similar storyline as 1989’s original Kickboxer, as a young man, played by X-Men: Days of Futures Past’s Alain Moussi, makes his way to Thailand to avenge the death of his brother by fighting Bautista’s Tong Po.

“Making (this film) has been a priority and passion of mine for several years and I’m thrilled to be able to partner with RLJ Entertainment to bring this genre back to theaters,” says co writer and producer Dimitri Logothetis.

Kickboxer: Vengeance is set to be released in theaters and VOD later this year.
