Tony Todd Almost Played A Villian In The Marvel Film

As much as we may love our favorite cult film actors, they don’t always manage to break out into the mainstream. This has not been the case with Candyman actor, Tony Todd. The man who played the iconic horror villainDaniel Robitaille, otherwise known as Candyman, has already managed to lend his vocals to CW’s The Flash, giving voice to the dark speedster, Zoom. Besides voicing the lightning fast villain, Todd has also lent his vocals to a number of animated productions including Transformers Prime, Young Justice, and as one of DC’s biggest baddies, Darkseid, in Lego DC Comics Super Heroes.

With all this work, it’s good to know that Todd still manages to turn some heads, even ones as large as the ones over at Disney.

According to an interview with Comic Book Resources, Tony Todd was close to playing the main villain in last year’s Marvel hit, Dr. Strange.

Todd went on to tell the story:

“I went in to do a session to play Dormammu. Benedict [Cumberbatch] had already recorded it but the producers wanted another voice just as an alternative. We did a six-hour session and then two weeks before the movie came out they let me know that they went back to the original choice.”

Unfortunately, Marvel decided on making Cumberbatch pull some double duty, not only as the Sorcerer Supreme but as the voice of Dormammu as well. Cumberbatch is no stranger to voiceover either, lending his vocals to The Hobbit film series as the scaly scoundrel, Smaug.

Todd notes that he didn’t tell the story to get pity points. The actor pointed out that he wanted to let people know that a career in film and television means a lot of disappointment, but to stay successful you have to take the good with the bad.

Not bad advice, even for those who don’t plan on an acting career.
